A vintage look to go with your cool vintage shades…

This guy was very popular. What you don’t see is the other half of a situation I’ll probably never be in again: At my back is a police officer while in front of me stands this guy yelling, “Free pot!”. Fortunately, the officer had both a sense of humor and the ability to read.

This happened after I ran into the guy with the free pot… 🙂

Wisperwood Tie-Dye helped a lot of people unleash their inner hippie.

Daytona Beach HippieFest #1

Yesterday, I drove to Daytona Beach to attend HippieFest. This was my first time attending, but I don’t think it will be my last. I had a ball taking photos of people and they seemed to be really into it. I will share some photos from the day over the next two or three blog posts. Long Out of Gas But Not Out of Go

Very special prayers for peace, healing and understanding in the wake of the evil and cowardly bombings in Boston yesterday.

Why don’t we get it? Why can’t we do it?

Today’s photo is another one from last week’s Daytona Beach photo walk. What appears from this image to be an old gas station is, in reality, now a popular and thriving local drinking establishment. So I guess it’s fair to say people fuel up around here, just in a very different way.

In the Shadows of Speed

So you might be wondering about the curious title of this post, and why the images included don’t convey motion or speed. Here’s the short answer: the photos are of the International Speedway Corporation™ headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was late getting to the beach the day I drove over to photograph the sunrise because a building had caught my eye en route. This is that building. These are the shots I captured when the sun was just peeking over the horizon through the heavy cloud cover that day.

The two images were caught about 5 minutes apart at a slightly different angle. I bracketed the shots, varying each by one to two stops, and decided in the end to create two HDR composite images from the various exposures. I like the mood and tones doing so added to the result. You can see that I did not choose to exploit the opportunity to make these images excessively surrealistic, as is so often done with HDR. It is a bit more telling in the second image, due to the increased contrast between light and dark among the sky and clouds.
