“Excuse me—there’s an archetype in your fountain”

“The height of cleverness is to be able to conceal it.”
— FranÇois, Duc de La Rochefoucauld

Aside from noting its beauty, there are all kinds of things I’d like to say about the fountain which stands in front of the Pinewood Estate home at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. I won’t.

Approaching the Unexplained

“I first realized I was psychic next Monday.”
― Dean Cavanagh

Psychics and those who attempt to divine the future using cards and palms are in no short supply here in Central Florida and I confess there are a few questions I have always wanted to ask. Consider, for instance, why one needs a security alarm system installed at their business location; can’t they do their own monitoring? I also have to assume that the lone vehicle one typically sees on the premises at these establishments belongs to its inspired spokesperson; but shouldn’t they know in advance when to come in and when they can just stay home? Finally, I have noticed that many psychics predictably go out of business rather quickly. Shouldn’t they have predicted that?

Eastern Redbud

As I drove into Dalton, Georgia on Monday evening, I was captivated by the beautiful purple-maybe-magenta-but-definitely-not-red blossoming trees growing both wild and in people’s yards. They were like fireworks of color lighting up the oncoming shadows of the setting sun. When I later inquired about what kind of tree this was, I was told they were Redbuds. On hearing this, my first thought was immediately vocalized (though in a much different dialect than my own) by my sister-in-law: “I think the guy that named ’em musta been color-blind.” To which, of course, I could only fittingly respond: “Yep, I’d say yur right.”

Peter, Get the Door!

Three friends die in a car accident and arrive in heaven for an orientation. They are all asked, “When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say about you?
The first guy says, “I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor of my time and a great family man.”
The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow.”
The last guy replies, “I would like to hear them say… LOOK! He’s moving!!!”

Redundant Natives

“If the English language made any sense, a catastrophe would be an apostrophe with fur.”
— Doug Larson

This man – I regret I did not get his name – was demonstrating the flutes he makes, this past Sunday at the Pine Castle Pioneer Days festival. I liked their sound: very soft and similar to an ocarina. He explained to me that his flutes are based on a design native to the Native Americans that were native to this part of Florida.

English is my native language, but its idiosyncrasies do leave me scratching my head sometimes.

When Urinal the Way

“We’re in something together. If this is who you are, you challenge people to be in all the way, and you explain what that means. Then you have to show them that you’re in all the way. That’s just how it is.”
– Bob Bradley

Public urinals are much like restaurant servers: rarely available when you need them. Yesterday at the beach, I stood in line waiting my turn to enter the restroom in front of a young boy – I’m guessing he was 8 or 9 – who was giving it all he had to be patient. He’d apparently waited too long to find the restrooms. The discomfort he felt was demonstrated not only in the distressed contortions that seized his face, but in the odd, birdlike dance he was engaged in. Clearly, he faced a challenge and was in all the way. As the door at last opened and a cloud of foul, hair-curling air followed the previous patron from the confines of the small public facility, I suddenly felt great compassion for the boy and urged him to go on and take his turn ahead of me.
