The Language of the Eyes

“The eyes have one language everywhere.”
— George Herbert

As a photographer, I enjoy studying people’s faces. Sometimes you meet people who have a natural brightness — a spark, if you will — behind their eyes. Theirs are the faces I especially love to photograph in hope of capturing some aspect of that quality. Ahlam has those eyes: beautiful, clear, deep, soft yet simultaneously bright. I hope she will enjoy her photo as much as I enjoyed making it.

Headshots: Reggie

I took these headshots of Reggie last weekend using a single remote softbox fitted to a Nikon SB-900 Speedlight and a Nikon SB-700 Speedlight mounted on-camera, modified with a Gary Fong Lightsphere. Since I haven’t posted in a few days due to my time being taken by a few projects I’m working on, I thought I’d share these with you. I hope you like them.

Street Portraiture: Faces of Kissimmee, #1

I am taking on a new personal street portraiture project, which I am calling “Faces of Kissimmee.” A once-small town in Central Florida, Kissimmee has tons of historic charm and character. In 1950, the population of Kissimmee was a mere 4,310 people. These residents primarily made their living either cattle ranching or growing citrus. When Walt Disney World opened its gates in 1971, Kissimmee was thrust into an unprecedented age of growth and forever changed. Its primary industries are now travel and tourism. In the wake of that change, the population has grown to more than 60,000 people.

I am going to be concentrating on random, unstaged street portraits for this series, and posting the photos here on “I Shutter at the Thought!”. It is my hope you will enjoy viewing some of the faces I encounter on the streets of Kissimmee, Florida.

Want to be featured in this project? If you’re in Kissimmee, send me an email and let’s set something up! There is no cost or obligation other than consent for me to use your photo.

People Watching

Some people make things happen,
some watch things happen,
while others wonder what has happened.

Stories on His Face

He had countless stories on his face. He was one of those people who I just knew I could probably sit down and listen to and learn from for hours. Something about him spoke to me of days past; time gone by; a history yellow and fading from memory. He was very friendly, walking along, like me, with a cup of coffee in his hand. When I asked to take his photo he was hesitant but eventually smiled and said, “Sure.” He wished me a good day and turned and went on his way before I could get his name.

Martha

It was a nice morning in north Georgia. Martha sat on her front porch with a fresh cup of coffee. She talked about the home across the road that had recently and somewhat suspiciously burned down. The sunlight was illuminating her face quite nicely… >>Click<<

Autumn and Bailey

I had the opportunity to photograph twins Autumn and Bailey yesterday. A really fun photo from the session came when the two kissed just as I was moving to change my position. I barely had time to react and catch the shot.
