Shadow Man

“The change of character brought about by the uprush of collective forces is amazing. A gentle and reasonable being can be transformed into a maniac or a savage beast. One is always inclined to lay the blame on external circumstances, but nothing could explode in us if it had not been there. As a matter of fact, we are constantly living on the edge of a volcano, and there is, so far as we know, no way of protecting ourselves from a possible outburst that will destroy everybody within reach. It is certainly a good thing to preach reason and common sense, but what if you have a lunatic asylum for an audience or a crowd in a collective frenzy? There is not much difference between them because the madman and the mob are both moved by impersonal, overwhelming forces.”
— C. G. Jung,
Psychology and Religion

Celebration: Lines, Shapes and Shadows

“The present changes the past. Looking back you do not find what you left behind.”
― Kiran Desai,
The Inheritance of Loss

Presenting two more photos from my photo-walk in Celebration Town Center, both taken at the AMC Celebration 2 theatre building — closed since 2010. The sun was out and quite bright, but the storm coming in created the perfect opportunity to capture some interesting shadows and dramatic clouds. My next post will feature the final image from that day. Like the photo of the theatre’s twin spires here, it also has great clouds. So please come back! I hope you enjoy the photos.

Turning Tables: Columbia

“There is strong shadow where there is much light.”
― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
Götz von Berlichingen

The Columbia Restaurant is one of the premier and most popular dining destinations in Celebration. However, last Sunday afternoon, the World Cup match had people’s minds focused on things other than award-winning authentic Spanish/Cuban food. This shot is my favorite takeaway from my afternoon photo-walk around Celebration Town Center. I hope you like it, too.

Michelle

“Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.”
— Charlotte Whitton

I chose today’s photo from my library in acknowledgement of reconnecting with a former Utah coworker and friend, who also happens to be a fellow photo enthusiast. I can’t say exactly why — and I hope she’s not offended by this — I feel like this photo and its colors somehow suit her. The quote certainly fits, as I often found her smiling face to be the sun that blotted out the shadow that was behind her.

I hope you enjoy the photo.

Towering Shadows

Sharp Shadows

And so, in one form or another, the witch hunt goes. We hate people “because,” we say, they are dirty, stupid, perverted, immoral…. They might be exactly what we say they are. Or they might not. That is totally irrelevent, however, because we hate them only if we ourselves unknowingly possess the despised traits ascribed to them. We hate them because they are a constant reminder of aspects of ourselves that we are loathe to admit.

Dark Shadows

The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.
– Carl Jung, Aion (Collected Works Vol. 9), 1951
