Magical Curves

“I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals; I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object.”
― Roland Barthes, Mythologies

Old Town Caricature Artist

“The best portraits are those in which there is a slight mixture of caricature.”
— Thomas B. Macaulay

Today I think I shall leave well enough alone with the Macaulay quote. I think I’ve met his requirement with this portrait; enough said.

Volkswagen de Cayey

“When I was growing up, a guy across the street had a Volkswagen Bug. He really wanted to make it into a Porsche. He spent all his spare money and time accessorizing this VW, making it look and sound loud. By the time he was done, he did not have a Porsche. He had a loud, ugly VW.”
Steve Jobs

If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time, you’ve learned previously that I like old Volkswagen Beetles. So when this sweet VW Beetle truck conversion came rolling down the street in Friday night’s Car Cruise event at Kissimmee’s Old Town, I took a photo. It wasn’t until later, when I was working with the photo, that I noticed the Puerto Rican flag hanging from the rear-view mirror contained the words, “SOY DE CAYEY.” I learned that this means, “I am from Cayey” — a small town in Puerto Rico. I became curious if that statement applied to the car, its driver, or both.

I had a little fun in post processing and gave this image a bit of a vintage look. I played around with color saturation levels using OnOne Software’s Perfect B&W from Perfect Photo Suite 7. In the real world, the car is actually the bright green you see on a can of Sprite. I like it better this way. And speaking of Perfect Photo: as a relatively new user, I have quickly become a big fan of this powerful and versatile editing suite. Its integration with Adobe Lightroom fits great in my workflow, too. I look forward to version 8, releasing later this month.

Curbed Ambition

A youthful mind is seldom totally free from ambition; to curb that is the first step to contentment, since to diminish expectation is to increase enjoyment.
         — Frances Burney

Taking advantage of the D800’s exceptional ability to handle high ISO captures, I went out to Kissimmee’s Old Town a couple of evenings ago with the goal of doing some natural light night photography. Crossing a street, I noticed an interesting contrast of light and shadow within the scene before me. I quickly dropped down on one knee and snagged this shot before the opportunity was gone. You have to take a shot when you see it; otherwise, that moment – that exact image – will be forever lost.

Halloween Fright Face by Alex

“I’ll bet living in a nudist colony takes all the fun out of Halloween.”
— Author Unknown

Last night, I went out to Old Town in hopes of finding some people strolling about in costumes. As it turned out, the only person in costume I ran into was this guy, who had quite an impressive airbrushed attitude on his face. “Alex Airbrush” is the artist behind this face. He has a booth at the Main Gate Flea Market on Highway 192 in Kissimmee (5401 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway / www.AlexAirbrush.com).

When searching for a quote to use with this post, I chose the one above simply because I realized face and body paints have probably rendered it incorrect and obsolete. In fact, I’m thinking that thanks to body paint, nudist colonies are probably among the most interesting places one could find oneself on Halloween! Perhaps next year I should look into a photographic excursion; it would certainly bring a whole new dimension to how I think about exposure settings.
