A Creation of Twisted Textures

“To every Armageddonist, every earth lover must keep saying with all the sincerity and affection we can muster, “May God make this world as beautiful to you as it has been to me.”
― David James Duncan, God Laughs & Plays; Churchless Sermons in Response to the Preachments of the Fundamentalist Right

Beauty Has a Forked Tongue

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
–Robert Brault

This is another one of James’ Phalaenopsis orchids that’s blooming right now. This one was a gift from canine celebrity Hairy Putter‘s dads, on the occasion of their move from Utah to California. They had to leave it behind due to California’s prohibition against bringing plants across the state line. I hope you like the photo.

Redwood Pinecone

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity . . . and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.

Hopping Aboard the Macro Bandwagon

“You don’t have to be the best, you just have to be better than you were last week.”
— Jerry Ghionis

I was feeling inspired this morning by the macro and minimalist images posted recently on a few of the photo blogs I follow, particularly those of Mike Osborn and Richard Cooper-Knight. I’d not used my micro lens — a DX format 60mm micro Nikon lens — since I bought the D800 last June. It seemed like a good time to put the D800 in DX mode and give it a go. I lit the photo using one of my favorite trial-and-error techniques: a dark room, a tiny flashlight and long exposure. I essentially “paint” the subject with the light while the shutter is open. This allows me to control the amount, quality and direction of light on a whim and leaves a good bit of the outcome up to spontaneity. I hope you like the result.

The Enkindled Spring

The Enkindled Spring

This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green,

Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes,

Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between

Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.

I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration

Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze

Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,

Faces of people streaming across my gaze.

And I, what fountain of fire am I among

This leaping combustion of spring? My spirit is tossed

About like a shadow buffeted in the throng

Of flames, a shadow that’s gone astray, and is lost.

– D. H. Lawrence
