A Creation of Twisted Textures

“To every Armageddonist, every earth lover must keep saying with all the sincerity and affection we can muster, “May God make this world as beautiful to you as it has been to me.”
― David James Duncan, God Laughs & Plays; Churchless Sermons in Response to the Preachments of the Fundamentalist Right

[Note: Following the publication if this blog post, I learned the plant in the photograph is called a Ghost Plant.]

Beauty Has a Forked Tongue

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
–Robert Brault

This is another one of James’ Phalaenopsis orchids that’s blooming right now. This one was a gift from canine celebrity Hairy Putter‘s dads, on the occasion of their move from Utah to California. They had to leave it behind due to California’s prohibition against bringing plants across the state line. I hope you like the photo.

Redwood Pinecone

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity . . . and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.
— William Blake (1757-1827)

The Machines

“The fact is, that civilization requires slaves. Human slavery is wrong, insecure, and demoralizing. On mechanical slavery, on the slavery of the machine, the future of the world depends.”
Oscar Wilde, 1854 – 1900

The Enkindled Spring

The Enkindled Spring

This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green,

Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes,

Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between

Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.

I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration

Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze

Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,

Faces of people streaming across my gaze.

And I, what fountain of fire am I among

This leaping combustion of spring? My spirit is tossed

About like a shadow buffeted in the throng

Of flames, a shadow that’s gone astray, and is lost.

– D. H. Lawrence
