Weekly Photo Challenge: Texture

This photo is a response to the Weekly Photo Challenge “texture” theme presented by the folks at The Daily Post. Cat fur (that still attached to a cat, specifically) is one of my favorite soft textures. I hope you like the photo.

Ella Phzztgerald

Continuing the “Cat Week” theme…

Ella is a Tortoiseshell, the term applied to describe her unique coloring. Almost always female, Tortoiseshells — or Torties — are typically known for having personalities as distinctive as their coloring of amber, black, cinnamon, brown and red; there’s no white as there is in a Calico. A fireball of personality, Ella is strong-willed, quite vocal and very territorial. She will hiss, spit and growl to demonstrate her displeasure with anything and everything from her chair being occupied to the water in her water bowl being the wrong temperature. She has been known to actually stomp her feet, spit and wail when something isn’t to her liking. This has earned her the name Ella Phzztgerald — “phzzt” being a phonetic approximation of the sound of her displeasure.

Lest this give you the wrong idea, Ella is also one of the sweetest and most affectionate cats you could ever hope to meet — once she gets to know you. Initially quite wary of strangers, she hides until she decides it’s safe to let you see her. Once that happens, though, it’s pure entertainment and affection from that point on.

Lethargy as an Art Form

“Guilt isn’t in cat vocabulary. They never suffer remorse for eating too much, sleeping too long or hogging the warmest cushion in the house. They welcome every pleasurable moment as it unravels and savour it to the full until a butterfly or falling leaf diverts their attention. They don’t waste energy counting the number of calories they’ve consumed or the hours they’ve frittered away sunbathing.
Cats don’t beat themselves up about not working hard enough. They don’t get up and go, they sit down and stay. For them, lethargy is an art form. From their vantage points on top of fences and window ledges, they see the treadmills of human obligations for what they are – a meaningless waste of nap time.”

The Yawn of the Rested

“You are getting very sleepy” is not a command when said to a cat; it is an eternal truth.
— Ari Rapkin

It’s Cat Week on I Shutter at the Thought! Each day this week, posts will center around a cat photo. If you’re a cat person (or a dog), be sure to stop by for a daily dose of cattitude.

Yellow and Grey

I’m sharing more of the images that stockpiled over the few months my blog posts were limited to the Faces of Kissimmee street portrait series. Today’s post features what has become my current favorite abstract image capture.

A contrast of colors and textures can catch my attention, as did this instance of two adjoining exterior wall boards on a downtown storefront. I like its bright simplicity; this image has been my Facebook page wallpaper for a few weeks now.

Pet Portrait: Cleo the Cat

I love to photograph cats. It can take a tremendous amount of patience, but most often just requires a desire to get to know the cat before getting out the camera.

Cleo loves her cat tree; she spends the majority of her sleeping and awake hours in the security and comfort of its carpet-padded shelves. It was the perfect place to photograph and interact with her. I think the shallow depth of field works well here to draw the viewer into Cleo’s eyes.

As an aside, I would like to extend a special greeting to my readers in beautiful and diverse Australia. Blog statistics show that I have recently gained a steady following of readers from Down Under and I think that’s cool. This isn’t to overlook the steady traffic coming from India, the UK and other lands distant to Central Florida, but as the jump in Australian readers has been fairly recent and significant, it presents the opportunity to welcome those visiting from a place I dream of seeing and photographing one day.

Noko: One Beautiful Girl

“The dog may be wonderful prose, but only the cat is poetry.”
– French proverb

It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally a cat comes along that seems to have been waiting for someone to show up and take its photo. I am happy I was around when this beautiful girl was having one of those photogenic moments.
