Lethargy as an Art Form

“Guilt isn’t in cat vocabulary. They never suffer remorse for eating too much, sleeping too long or hogging the warmest cushion in the house. They welcome every pleasurable moment as it unravels and savour it to the full until a butterfly or falling leaf diverts their attention. They don’t waste energy counting the number of calories they’ve consumed or the hours they’ve frittered away sunbathing.
Cats don’t beat themselves up about not working hard enough. They don’t get up and go, they sit down and stay. For them, lethargy is an art form. From their vantage points on top of fences and window ledges, they see the treadmills of human obligations for what they are – a meaningless waste of nap time.”
― Helen Brown, Cleo

Light Feathers

I’m continuing today’s earlier pondering of those large and wonderful Florida Sandhill cranes. I would urge you to click on the photo to view it at a larger size – it really does look better. I like the way the slow shutter speed added flow, texture and motion to their bodies and wings. The B&W conversion came about because I wanted them to really stand out from their surroundings and exploit the contrast of light and dark.

Tomorrow, I’ll be starting a week of daily posts dedicated to my favorite four-legged friends. If you’re a fan of cats, you’ll want to come back.

Camera Curious Cleo

Cleo was 10 years-old when she arrived at the shelter 2 years ago. She lived there for a little more than 3 months before being rescued. A complete sweetheart, one can only presume she got overlooked because of her age, for it certainly couldn’t be an issue of personality. She is friendly, curious, affectionate and quick to try to give humans a bath with her sandpaper tongue. I don’t know if she thinks we’re all dirty or if she just likes the way we taste. Her beautiful tortoise-shell coloring combines with a very distinctive voice and an insatiably curious disposition. She seems to enjoy having a forever home now. Her housekeeper and kitchen staff certainly loves her.

Moonlight

“Moonlight does things to a street scene that no other natural or man-made phenomenon can effect. People walk slower, their smiles lingering on contended faces. Horses that usually move along fast enough to stir up the dust off the street plod lazily in the clear, cool night. And in dark corners where people forget to look, the goons come out.”
― Bailey Bristol, The Devil’s Dime

While the quote above refers to actual moonlight, I’ve long enjoyed the quirkiness of the street scene created by the service counter entrance to Moonlight Starter and Generator. In business for nearly 40 years, it’s a quiet place where things do seem to move slower. You may notice in the photo how things are “in dark corners where people forget to look”, though perhaps not so much forgotten as ignored.

Yellow and Grey

I’m sharing more of the images that stockpiled over the few months my blog posts were limited to the Faces of Kissimmee street portrait series. Today’s post features what has become my current favorite abstract image capture.

A contrast of colors and textures can catch my attention, as did this instance of two adjoining exterior wall boards on a downtown storefront. I like its bright simplicity; this image has been my Facebook page wallpaper for a few weeks now.

Pet Portrait: Cleo the Cat

I love to photograph cats. It can take a tremendous amount of patience, but most often just requires a desire to get to know the cat before getting out the camera.

Cleo loves her cat tree; she spends the majority of her sleeping and awake hours in the security and comfort of its carpet-padded shelves. It was the perfect place to photograph and interact with her. I think the shallow depth of field works well here to draw the viewer into Cleo’s eyes.

As an aside, I would like to extend a special greeting to my readers in beautiful and diverse Australia. Blog statistics show that I have recently gained a steady following of readers from Down Under and I think that’s cool. This isn’t to overlook the steady traffic coming from India, the UK and other lands distant to Central Florida, but as the jump in Australian readers has been fairly recent and significant, it presents the opportunity to welcome those visiting from a place I dream of seeing and photographing one day.

Cleo the Cat

“The cat is above all things a dramatist.”
– Margaret Benson

Tortie’s seem to have very distinct and vocal personalities. Cleo is no different. At 11 years old, she is very affectionate and very curious, but very specific about wanting things on her terms. It took a while to gain her confidence and peak her interest in what was going on, but eventually the moment came. Here’s the photo; I hope she likes it.
