I was waiting to cross the street when I turned around and noticed this gentleman sitting at a window table in a downtown Salt Lake City diner. I liked how the reflection of the tree, car, sidewalk and planter pulled him out of the confines of his diner surroundings and thrust him into the outside world. I also liked the way the metal piece on the rear of the reflected vehicle masked his identity.
I did not like that I was in a rush and had to ignore my sudden craving for a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.

Looks to me that the “gentlemen” was so engrossed in whatever he was reading that he really was oblivious to his reflected surroundings. Maybe he really wanted to be in the reflected environment, but by sitting inside next to the window he could enjoy the better parts of being outside while giving him seclusion from the noise and hustle-bustle of sidewalk and street traffic in air conditioned comfort. Or maybe the window seat was the only one available when the gentemen needed to sit down and enjoy his reading material and nourishment without being secluded to his quite homeplace or nagging wife. Your picture tells a story, Earl, that goes beyond your craving for a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.

He was actually engrossed in conversation with an individual I could not see, but I love that you have psychoanalyzed him based on my photograph. 🙂 I want, so much as possible, for photographs to be about things rather than of things. I am drawn to images that tell a story, or cause us to imagine one.

I do that when I am talking about or thinking about something uncomfortable. I do it when I feel vulnerable. Vampires….they are a crafty lot. lol
